Kakais under attack by the “Islamic State” in Kirkuk<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I did not exist\u201d one Kakai teenage girl said in Kirkuk. \u201cJust because I am Kakai, I have to be at risk and be displaced from my village\u201d, she added. These were the words of a 16 year old Kakai girl during their evacuation from the city.<\/p>\n

The Kakai community in the Middle East is going thousands of years back, originating from Kurdistan in Hawraman, a mountainous area located on both sides of the border between Iraq and Iran. Non-official sources estimate that Kakai people are numbered between 250.000 -300.000 in Iraq, most of whom are living in Kirkuk. Indeed, many scholars are describing Kirkuk as \u201cKakai\u2019s Capital\u201d, meaning it was founded by this group. The Kakai name of Kirkuk is Baba Gurgur. Marginalisation and discrimination against Kakai people by the Iraqi government, after it brought the disputed territories (and Kirkuk) under its control, provides an opportunity to Islamic fighters to persecute Kakais, as they are considered to be disbelievers. Imagine what would be the Islamic State\u2019s reaction to Kakai (Yarsani) people?<\/p>\n

In the last Iraqi election (May 12, 2018), there were 329 contested seats. The minority quota system allocates five Christian seats, one seat for Yezidis in Nineveh, Mandaeans in Baghdad, Shabaks in Nineveh, and Fayli Kurds in Wasit, but no seats for Kakai minority in Iraq.<\/p>\n

On December 9, 2017, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Haider al-Abadi, announced the end of a three-year war by Iraqi forces to drive the Islamic State group out of the country. This was one of the best news we have ever heard as a minority in Iraq and Kurdistan, because we as a minority know better than anyone what the Islamic State group was and who were our victims and what kind of difficulties and persecution people have encountered in these three-year. For minorities in Iraq, this announcement was just a changing of actors in a new scenario; from the Islamic State group to the Iran-backed Hashed al-Shaabi militias. It seems that we must use `is` and `are` for Islamic State group and NOT `was` or `were`. The group never ceased to exist and the ideas of Daesh remain inside people themselves.<\/p>\n

Islamic State activities since the announcement of the end of the three-year war are increasing in Iraq, mainly in the provinces of Diyala and Salahaddin, and particularly in Kirkuk and the disputed territories, but this time the victims are Kakai people. IS has re-appeared in Kakai villages and have committed several crimes, including executions, kidnappings, bombings, and ambushes on both security forces and civilians.<\/p>\n

This time Kakais are facing a new displacement from villages in Daquq. Yet, the Iraqi government pays no attention to the plight of this religious minority. Recently, eight villages out of a total 13 in the region were evacuated.<\/p>\n

Following the October 16, 2017 takeover by Iraqi forces and Shia militias, Peshmerga were pushed out from most of the disputed territories, including Kirkuk. They say \u201ca drowning man will clutch at a straw\u201d and Kakais in Daquq tried to clutch to the Shia militias and joined the Hashd al-Shaabi to protect their people and to stay on their lands and to protect their shrines, most of which are located in Kirkuk. Kakai regiment within the PMU comprises of over 300 Kakai fighters, who have not been paid for the past eight months and have received very few weapons.<\/p>\n

Thus, as a Kakai I am calling for pressure on Iraqi government for more support and protection to Kakai people. Otherwise, another Shingal (massacre) will occur, this time in Kirkuk and against Kakai people. In the past months and until today, numerous Kakai activists have resorted to local media, TV channels and social media in Arabic and Kurdish languages trying to attract the attention of Iraqi and Kurdish politicians, but to no avail so far. For thousands of years, hundreds of poets, writers and leaders were Kakais and they offered their life to the Middle East and Iraqi and Kurdish society in particular, but now-days no one cares about us. The only choice I had is 72 hours fasting, eating nothing only water and I will continue to do such fasting (nothing only water), to my Mawlla (my God) requesting for a Savior. And trying to write this article as another choice to attract attention to our case with full tears in my eyes, please help Kakai people in Iraq, please protect us.<\/p>\n
